Day 1

After lots of months of preparation on many fronts, Day 1 is finally here.

We took a bus from Portland, OR to Astoria, OR (about two hours). I met 27 of the nicest riders from places like Australia, Netherlands, Canada, Florida, California, Texas, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New York, and I am sure other places yet to meet.

We arrived in Astoria, where Lewis & Clark ended up on their western journey, and what a heavenly place it is.  It is located at the confluence of the mighty Columbia River as she dumps into the Pacific Ocean.  Our hotel is on the Columbia River, and my room overlooks the river as well as a bridge heading into
the state of Washington.
The Coast Guard has a mighty presence here as the waters are rough for any size vessel, and many wrecks are here to prove it.
We met our guides for the trip, had a nice lunch, and were fitted for the bikes we will ride these next 45 days.  Of course I have to name mine, so in honor of Janine mine will be called Niner.
The group of 27 riders then headed out of town to Fort Stevens National Park (across a bridge that had severe cross winds…I am proud to say I white knuckled it over), and our meeting with the mighty Pacific Ocean.  We faced very strong head winds. This area has remnants of the awful fires all over the Pacific Northwest, and these winds have not helped to contain the fires.
The picture of me at the Pacific is not flattering but it was emotional as I am really realizing how far a journey it will be to get back to all those I love.  It is however a great source of
inspiration.
Tomorrow will be a 99 mile ride day back to Portland, OR (and yes across the same bridge I biked today…)
Niner, don’t let me down!
Love,
Dan
