A Perfect Day Off

Dear All,

Had a GREAT night’s sleep last night and a perfect day off as I get ready for the next 9-day stretch into Madison, WI.
Being in Rapid City, SD, we are close to both Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse so I was able to visit both this afternoon.
Each were so great in their own way and I am so glad that I had the time to visit both.  Weather came in at the Crazy Horse
sculpture so I had to settle for a long range shot.
Few fun facts that I learned today:
1) South Dakota’s state insect is the Honey Bee; and honey is the only food that doesn’t spoil.
2) The Eisenhower interstate system requires that one mile in every five must be straight.  These straight sections are useable as emergency landing strips.
3) Average adult cows drink 10-20 gallons of water daily.
4) Deadman’s hand in pocket = black aces and black eights (Wild Bill was shot in the back playing this hand.)
5) How the Bad Lands were named: The French trappers who were exploring the west in the early 1800s called the area “a bad land to cross”.  The Dakota Sioux Indians labeled “makosica” meaning “land bad”.
Onto tomorrow,
Dan
